Many of us choose to start a diet/exercise plan once a new year starts. It's important to take care of yourself and live a healthy lifestyle all year round, not just the first few months. How does one stay motivated during the cold winter months (for those living in colder places) or keep that motivation long after the new year? Today I'm sharing 5 tips to stay fit this season no matter what your goals are!
1. Just Do It: Exercise releases those "feel good" endorphins so you almost always feel better after working out. This is what some people call a runner's high. Workouts can be therapeutic, so even on days you don't feel like exercising, just do it! More often then not, you'll feel great afterwords.
2. Make Small Changes: At the start of the new year, it's easy to make a huge list of all the things we want to accomplish and this can cause an overwhelmed feeling that leads to giving up. Make one or two small changes a week until it becomes routine. Take your time, it's not a race so be sure to take things at your own pace.
3. Create Healthy Habits: Understanding what motivates you and what you need to achieve your goal helps you to create healthy habits. For example, if you don't have time to cook breakfast in the morning before work/school, prep breakfast the night before. This saves you time while providing a nutritious start to the day. Pretty soon you'll create the habit of having breakfast. Apply the same principle to other aspects like workout out each day.
4. Buddy Up: Being accountable is a game changer when it comes to health goals! There is a sense of guiltiness when you miss a workout or eat the second slice of cake. Count on that person to keep you motivated on days when you don't feel like sticking to those healthy habits (and vice versa). Having someone to workout with makes it easier to get that gym session in. I've noticed I push myself more when someone is there watching me do the reps!
5. Love Yourself: This is the most important tip I can give!! Regardless of what stage you are at with your health and fitness goals, love yourself. Be proud of what you have accomplished. If you have a bad day or week, focus on how you can improve next week. Once you reach a small goal, reward yourself with a new water bottle or active-wear; something other than food to keep you moving forward with your goals.
